Introducing the CLS Gramil

Cut binding channels by hand with the classic luthier tool.
The CLS Gramil bears against the rim of a guitar body to cut the inside edge of the binding/purfling ledge to a precise width, depth, and squareness.
Inspired by Richard Schneider's design, our gramil tool is handmade in Kingston Ontario, with a solid curly maple body, aluminum bladeholder, and custom high-carbon steel blade. The blade is dual-beveled to suit both pulling and pushing motions.
This is the traditional tool used by luthiers to cut binding channels by hand. The blade can be set to the precise width and depth of your binding and purfling and used to cut a clean edge square to the sides of your guitar. The flat face of the tool bears again the convex surfaces of the guitar, while the rounded face is used to reach inside the waist and any cutaway portions of the instrument. Then, the excess material is removed with a chisel.
For luthiers using our Binding Jig to route the channels, the gramil can be used to score the binding ledges prior to routing the channels, reducing the risk of tearout.
